Saakini Daakini Movie Review : Despite a valiant effort from Regina and Nivetha, this action comedy crumbles under its own weight

Story: Damini (Regina Cassandra) and Shalini (Nivetha Thomas), from contrasting backgrounds, end up at Telangana Police Academy as police trainees. On one of their outings, they witness the kidnapping of a girl who saves them from a possible accident a few moments ago. Both of them decide to save her. However, their pursuit takes them to darker city alleys and uncovers a deeper and more sinister medical mafia.

Review: The first half of the movie, propelled by the rivalry between Damini and Shalini during their training in the police academy, gives the audience a glimpse of the academy and into our lead characters’ lives. Damini wearing 1908 and Shalini with 1919 badge numbers after some nasty comebacks, literally break into a fist fight in front of their batchmates before turning into best buddies.

The humour generated from the daily activities and work is entertaining. Actors Prudvi Raj, Sudharshan and others aided in creating a decent first half. The second half takes a different tangent, with our lead pair taking matters into their own hands. While Regina and Nivetha are exceptional in physically demanding roles, the second fails to impress. The action sequences towards the end look stylistic and cinematic.

The film, directed by Sudheer Varma, has writing and screenplay by Akshay Poolla, music by Mikey McCleary, cinematography by Richard Prasad, editing by Viplav Nyshadam, art direction by Gandhi Nadikudikar and stunts by Venkat. Though adapted well, this remake of the Korean film Midnight Runners could have been made better.
