Ravi Bopanna Movie Review : This one is Ravichandran’s signature ‘cocktale’

Plot: Ravi Bopanna, a former police officer, leads a lonely life. Though he is retired, his colleagues often depend on him to solve the crimes because of his adept investigative skills. One of his ex-wife accident pushes him to investigate the organ harvesting scam.

Review: Ravi Bopanna spends his days depressed, smoking and drinking alone in his gloomy, river-facing house. But whenever crime knocks on the door, Ravi transforms into a sharp investigating officer who can solve any crime in minutes. The department knows his investigative prowess and often sing praises. But after solving the crime and winning appreciation, he comes back to an empty house, to his depressed self, often dwelling in ex wives’ (Radhika Kumaraswamy and Kavya Shetty) memories. His ex-wife Spoorthy’s (Kavya Shetty) accident pushes his buttons, which makes him take a lead to solve the organised crime for organs.

The movie is inspired from 2018 Malayalam film Joseph. However, Ravichandran has added a lot of colours to make it seem like a signature ‘Ravichandran’ film. His ‘piece piece’ culture makes a come back with unnecessary breaking of whiskey bottles and wine glasses. From Premaloka to Malla, Ravichandran has brought in several shades of his previous films in the guise of music or choreography. The multi-dimensional narrative goes back and forth and is mostly confusing. Since it is not an official remake, there are a lot of loose ends in the narration with no justification. Some of the shots look like they are shot in a different era. The film comes together only in the last 20 minutes.

Ravichandran is at his best in this Ravichandran directorial. He is tailor-made for the role and does a good job just by being himself. He reiterates that 60 is the new beginning and lives up to it. Sudeep has aced in the cameo as a lawyer – the role seems like a cakewalk for him. Radhika Kumaraswamy and Kavya Shetty, as Radhika and Spoorthy respectively, have done their jobs perfectly – which is to look good and titillate the audience by taking turns. Mohan, Ramakrishna, Jai Jagdish and Ravishankar Gowda play Ravi’s good friends who appear occasionally and become a part of the conversation. They don’t contribute much to the film. There’s also the signature Ravichandran colours and costumes that add to the presentation of the story. The movie is strictly for Ravichandran fans.
