Poovan Movie Review : Poor attempt at slice of life movie
Poovan had an intersting story line- a rooster disrupts the sleep of a young man in the neighborhood and what happens after. However, not only is Poovan disappointing in its execution, the climax fell like a wet bomb. The movie tried to show intersting ‘real’ characters, but apart from Veena portrayed by Akhila Bhargavan, no one stands out as remarkable. Almost two hours spent in the theatre seemed neverending.
Attempting to portray a man suffering from sleeplessness, Antony Varghese seemed out of his depth as Hari. The character came off as boring and irritating. In fact, Vineeth Vishwam’s Manu who is Hari’s friend and a ‘good friend’ stock character seemed more interesting. There are three romantic storylines in the movie, and apart from the initial wooing and courting between Veena and Kannan, none of them could make us invested in the movie.
All that said, Bindhu Satishkumar as Mariyamma was an interesting character with a depth no one else had. The way she takes a liking to the cockerel initially is abrupt but the bond that followed was executed flawlessly. The movie also had Anishma Anilkumar as Sini who got a random romance plot line with no depth in the second half. Sajin Cherukayil as Benny was interesting at times but with the entire movie being a patchwork job, it’s hard to retain that interest, especially after he grows from a side character to a main character. Rinku Ranadheer is also part of the movie, portraying the role of Hari’s love interest Diju Paul.
The film is directed by Vineeth Vasudevan and written by Varun Dhara who also played the role of Hari’s friend Febin in the movie. Sajith Purushan did the cinematography and music is by Midhun Mukundan.
